Rise in Cybercrime in Delhi: How to Stay Protected
Delhi has witnessed a sharp rise in cybercrime incidents, highlighting the growing threats in the digital space. As online fraud, identity theft, and cyber-attacks become more common, it is crucial to stay informed and know how to respond if you fall victim to a cybercrime.
Alarming Cybercrime Statistics
In 2024, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) reported an average of 7,000 cybercrime complaints per day nationwide. This represents a staggering 60% increase compared to the previous year.
Delhi, in particular, has been at the center of this surge. The cybercrime helpline, 1930, receives around 55,000 to 60,000 calls per month (approximately 1,700 calls per day), with about 700 to 800 of these being new complaints daily, according to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). These numbers paint a concerning picture, emphasizing the need for better awareness and preparedness.
What to Do if You're a Victim of Cybercrime
If you have been a victim of cyber fraud, it is crucial to act quickly to minimize the damage. Here's what you should do:
- Immediate Action: Call the cybercrime helpline at 1930 as soon as possible. Early reporting can increase the chances of recovery.
- Report Online: You can also file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Visit Cyber Police Stations: In cases of urgent or serious crimes, you can visit the nearest cyber police station for assistance. The Delhi Police’s dedicated cyber unit is also available at cyber.delhipolice.gov.in.
